Former Wachovia Site Is Sold

The vacant site of the former Wachovia Building at 101 North Front Street has been sold, and a "large, upscale hotel" is among the development opportunities, the new owner said Tuesday. Matt Mattera of Hauppauge, N.Y., bought the property for $1.5 million, according to documents filed Tuesday with the New Hanover County Register of Deeds.

The site was once proposed for the View condominiums, a luxury project that went under as the real estate market collapsed here. The five-story Wachovia Building was torn down to make way for the project. BB&T, which foreclosed on the property, took bids Aug. 31, 2011.
