Work moving forward on VA clinic on airport land
Crews have started clearing the land for the new Veterans Administration clinic to be built on property owned by Wilmington International Airport. Construction is expected to be completed on the approximately 98,000-square-foot building in December 2012, he said. Milwaukee-based Summit Smith Healthcare Facilities will build the clinic. The community-based outpatient clinic is being built on 19 acres of the airport's grounds as a long-term lease.
Summit Smith will build the facility for nearly $25 million with their funds, Morton said. In turn, the VA will lease the building from Summit Smith for $3 million a year for 20 years. The VA also will lease the land from the airport for 20 years with three 10-year extensions, he said. The project is expected to generate about 150 construction jobs.
